Why the sudden interest in WMP 12?

The blog has moved

I will not be taking this site down but please remember that the blog has now moved to colinwalker.me.uk
so why not come and join me at the new site.

If you have subscribed to the RSS feed this has been redirected to the new one so you won't miss a thing.

For a while now, the biggest draw to the blog has been the post "Will there be a Windows Media Player 12?" but the last few days have seen a ridiculously large volume of traffic (in excess of 300 visits per day) to that one post resulting mainly from search engine queries - here's a example of a top ten sources from MyBlogLog

The obvious question was why? A few searches of my own revealed a rather suspicious Windows Media Player 12 Beta 1 package doing the rounds but, the fact that this was only available from torrent sites and not in English should instantly set the alarm bells ringing.

Being the curious sort I checked it out and found that, as suspected, it is a fake. The wmp12.exe file contains a hacked Windows Media Player 11 installer designed to look like a new version

but the setup_wm.exe within the package gives the game away

The installer package has been rigged to install a file called WMP12.exe but this just install an old version 10 file in to Program Files\Windows Media Player\Visualizations.

So, the simple message is don't bother installing it as it's not real. If there is a WMP 12 beta and I am on the program you can be assured that I will blog it providing that is it not in breach of NDA to do so.

# Pondering the zeitgeist...

It's interesting to see the recent surge of queries for "Windows Media Player 12." I searched for it after shutting WMP 11 down for the night, and it just hit me that I would like a newer version. This could be because I use it everyday, all day, while working, and I thought it would be nice. It could also be the collective consciousness of users like me who are used to upgrading similar programs, and needing to "upgrade" our work day. I do believe we are all part of a system (zeitgeist), and that the internet and computer programs that millions of people use are bringing the consciousness of those people closer together.

Brad,

As cool and one-worldly as I wish it was I think we can safely rule out the collective unconscious. It's more a case of the collective wish to have something we can't and a desire to be leet with some little script-kiddie wanting to make a name for themself by releasing a fake and dupe the world!
